How Protein Skimming Works
Protein skimming is an important part of marine aquarium filtration.
A protein skimmer uses fine air bubbles to attract and collect dissolved organic compounds from aquarium water. As organic waste binds to the surface of the bubbles, the resulting foam rises into the collection cup, allowing the waste to be removed from the aquarium system.
Removing organic waste before it breaks down can help reduce the accumulation of unwanted nutrients and support better overall water quality.
The Bubble Magus Curve Extreme range combines dedicated Rock SP pumps with high air intake rates to produce the fine bubble-rich environment required for effective protein skimming.
Choose the Right Curve Extreme
Choosing the correct model depends on more than simply matching your aquarium's water volume.
Consider:
- Aquarium volume
- Aquarium type
- Fish stocking levels
- Coral stocking
- Feeding levels
- Overall bioload
- Available sump space
- Desired nutrient export
For lightly stocked systems, a smaller model may provide sufficient skimming capacity. Heavily stocked aquariums with larger fish populations may benefit from choosing a model with greater capacity.
Always consider the manufacturer's recommended aquarium volume alongside the actual bioload of your system.
Installation
The Bubble Magus Curve Extreme protein skimmers are designed for use within a suitable sump-based marine aquarium filtration system.
Before installation, ensure your sump has sufficient space for the selected model and that the skimmer can be positioned correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Ensure the pump is correctly installed and that the skimmer is operating at the appropriate water depth for optimal performance.
Follow the manufacturer's installation and operating instructions when setting up your skimmer.
Break-In Period
Like most new protein skimmers, the Curve Extreme may require a break-in period after installation.
During the initial setup period, the skimmer may produce inconsistent foam or behave differently as the surfaces inside the skimmer become conditioned.
Allow the skimmer time to settle and adjust the settings gradually rather than making frequent large changes.
Performance should stabilise as the skimmer becomes established within your aquarium system.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential for maintaining consistent protein skimmer performance.
Empty and clean the collection cup regularly to prevent accumulated waste from affecting skimming performance.
Inspect the pump and impeller periodically and remove any debris or deposits that may affect performance.
Clean the skimmer body and air intake components as required.
Salt creep and salt deposits can restrict airflow over time, so regularly check the air intake and airline for blockages.
The frequency of maintenance will depend on aquarium size, bioload and the amount of waste produced by your system.
