African cichlids are a diverse & colorful group of freshwater fish primarily from the Great Rift Lakes of East Africa, especially Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, & Lake Victoria. Known for their vibrant colors, complex behaviors, & territorial nature, African cichlids require a thoughtful tank setup & compatible tank mates. They thrive in rocky environments with plenty of caves & hiding spots. While stunning to observe, they can be aggressive, especially during breeding, so maintaining a balanced social structure & proper tank size is key to long-term success.
Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 80 litres
- African cichlids prefer hard, alkaline water that mimics their native lakes. Stability is crucial to avoid stress and aggression.
- Provide plenty of rocks and caves to create barriers and establish territories.
Average Adult Size:
- Body length: 10–15 cm (varies widely by species)
- Most African cichlids reach adult size within 6–12 months. Growth rate depends on species, diet, and tank conditions.
