Family: Cyprinodontiformes
Killifish are a diverse group of small, colourful fish found in freshwater and brackish habitats across Africa, America, and parts of Asia. Known for their striking patterns and short lifespans, many species are adapted to temporary water bodies & have unique breeding behaviours. Killifish do best in peaceful, species-only tanks or with calm tank mates. They are best kept in pairs or small groups, depending on the species and temperament. Some species are annual, meaning they naturally live only for a year, while others live longer with proper care.
Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 30 litres
- They prefer subdued lighting, soft water, & plenty of hiding spots using plants, leaf litter, or caves.
- Provide good filtration and a secure lid, as they are excellent jumpers
Average Adult Size:
- Body length: 3–6 cm (varies by species)
- Killifish typically reach adult size in 3–5 months
Water Parameters:
- pH: 5.5–7.5
- Alkalinity: 1–8 KH
- General Hardness (GH): 4–10
- Temperature: 20–26°C
Food:
- Live or frozen foods: brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, mosquito larvae
- Some species may accept high-quality micro pellets or flakes
- Feed small portions 1–2 times daily
- Remove leftovers to keep water clean
