Overview

Family: Neocaridina davidi

Cherry Shrimp are small, colourful freshwater invertebrates popular for their bright colours and algae-cleaning abilities. Native to Taiwan, they are hardy and easy to breed, making them a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. These shrimp thrive in stable, clean water and will happily graze on algae and detritus, helping to keep tanks clean. Females are larger and more vibrant than males, and under ideal conditions, they can breed readily every few weeks.

Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 20 litres

  • Best kept with peaceful, small fish or in a species-only tank
  • Good companions: snails, rasboras, small tetras, and otocinclus catfish
  • Provide dense plants, moss, and hiding areas for security and breeding

Average Adult Size:

  • Body length: 2-3cm
  • Reach adult size in 3–4 months
  • Reproduce readily in stable, planted tanks
  • Lifespan: 1–2 years, depending on water quality and diet

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Alkalinity (KH): 3–10
  • General Hardness (GH): 6–12
  • Temperature: 20–26°C

Food:

  • Omnivores and scavengers — eat leftover food and biofilm
  • Feed shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber)
  • Supplement with spirulina flakes or specialised shrimp foods for color and health
  • Feed lightly — they graze throughout the day
