Overview
Family: Ambystoma mexicanum.
Native to the cool, freshwater lakes of Mexico, Axolotls are admired for their feathery gills, wide smiles, & regenerative abilities. They require stable, cool water temperatures, low flow, & excellent filtration to. Axolotls thrive best alone or with peaceful tank mates in spacious, bare-bottom or sand-bottom tanks with plenty of hides. They are sensitive to poor water quality & stress, so regular maintenance & gentle handling are essential. Avoid warm water, rough substrates, & bright lighting to ensure a calm, thriving environment.
Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 90 litres
- Axolotls are solitary by nature & prefer calm, stable environments, but they may nip at tank mates if space is limited.
- Providing ample space helps reduce stress & prevent aggression.
Average Adult Size:
- Body length: 15–25cm
- Full size (including tail): Up to 30cm
- Axolotls are slow growers & may take 12–24 months to reach full size with proper care.
Water Parameters:
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Alkalinity: 1–8 KH
- General Hardness (GH): 7–14
- Temperature: 16–18°C (avoid temps above 20°C)
Food:
- High-quality axolotl pellets specially formulated for carnivorous amphibians
- Frozen or live foods: Bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, earthworms
- Occasional treats like small pieces of fish or shrimp can be offered
- Feed 2–3 times a week, giving only what they can eat in a few minutes
