Overview

Family: Planorbidae

Ramshorn Snails are small, hardy freshwater snails named for their distinctive coiled, ram-like shells. Found throughout tropical and subtropical regions, they come in various colours, including brown, blue, pink, and red. These snails are excellent tank cleaners, consuming algae and decaying plant matter. However, they can reproduce quickly if food is abundant, so controlled feeding and regular maintenance help keep populations in balance. They are a valuable part of many aquariums, contributing to a healthy ecosystem.

Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 10 litres

  • Peaceful and safe for community tanks
  • Avoid snail-eating species (such as loaches, puffers, or large cichlids)
  • Provide plants, driftwood, and a tight lid as they may wander

Average Adult Size:

  • Body length: 1-2.5cm
  • Reach adult size within 2–3 months
  • Breed readily in aquariums with consistent food sources
  • Lifespan: 1–2 years, depending on diet and water quality

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Alkalinity (KH): 4–12
  • General Hardness (GH): 6–18
  • Temperature: 18–24°C
  • Note: Require calcium in the water to maintain strong, healthy shells

Food:

  • Omnivorous scavengers that feed on algae, detritus, and leftover food
  • Supplement with algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, lettuce)
  • Avoid overfeeding fish, excess food can lead to rapid snail population growth
  • Provide a balanced calcium source
