Family: Loricariidae
Otocinclus Catfish, often called “Otos”, are small, gentle algae eaters native to South American rivers and streams. They are highly valued for their ability to control soft algae without damaging plants. Otos thrive in well-established, mature aquariums with plenty of natural biofilm. Shy at first, they are best kept in groups where they feel secure and display natural social behaviours. Their small size, peaceful nature, and algae-eating habits make them an excellent addition to community aquariums.
Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres
- Peaceful schooling fish — best kept in groups of 4–6 or more
- Ideal companions: tetras, rasboras, shrimp, corydoras, and small gouramis
- Provide plants, driftwood, and smooth surfaces for grazing

- Body length: 3-5cm
- Reach adult size within 4–6 months
- Lifespan: typically 3–5 years with stable water conditions
- Sensitive to poor water quality — regular maintenance is key

Food:
- Omnivorous scavengers with a varied diet
- Feed sinking pellets, algae wafers, and vegetables (peas, carrot, zucchini, spinach)
- Enjoy occasional protein treats (prawns, worms, or shrimp)
- Feed 3–4 times per week — remove uneaten food to prevent water fouling
